Cambodia – Siem Reap – November 12 – 17, 2002

We spent some time that day at the Land Mine Museum.  There are still many mines left over from all the wars, and lots of people on the streets who are missing legs or arms..

This is a mine.  It is buried usually a little deeper than this, but it is very well camouflaged and not easy to spot!

This is the mine outline if you couldn’t see it in the last photo.  It is large enough to destroy a tank.  It is estimated that all the mines will not be cleared from Cambodia until 2050.

Mines are not much of a problem in and around Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, but the outlying areas, especially along the borders, are quite dangerous.  4 people are hurt by landmines every day, so the problem is bad, but not bad enough to get the governments to speed up any removal.
