Japan – Arrival in Tokyo  November 30, 2002

 

 

 

We arrived early in the morning, and were at our Ryokan (a Japanese-style hotel, with tatami mats on the floor and generally a public bath) about 10am.  The area of town was Asakusa.

This was one of the many shops right down our street, a shopping area right out of the 1890’s.

 

 

 

 



Known for its architecture, Japan’s Asahi beer company had these two buildings built for their corporate headquearters.

Japan was a big change for all of us.  First world amenities and clean bathrooms everywhere.  Lots of cars and traffic, but polite people.  But what we realized within the first day is that the most important thing is ---- drinking water. 

For the first time since we left the states, we could drink the tap water anywhere in the country, and this was the single largest difference between any of the countries we visited and Japan or the US.  It brought home just how much we take fresh water for granted.
