Japan – Onsen life - Kaniyu Onsen-   December 6, 2002

About 2 hours away from Nikko was the onsen, or hot spring, we were planning to visit.  Set deep in the mountains, a half hour by their heavy-duty bus from the end of the road (and a mightly small road it is), the Kaniyu Onsen was an unforgettable place. This is their trophy room.

Bill took only the one photo of the onsen.  But the morning of the 6th we stopped into a recreation Edo village, where he saw a friendly Ninja.

This was a wig shop at the same Edo village – they make wigs for all sorts of geisha and performance activities.

Arriving after dark on the 5th, we then settled into the outdoor bath – no clothes allowed – very bad form to wear a bathing suit.  And had a relaxing bath in the natural hot springs that bubble up from the ground around the onsen.  In business since 1933, the family still owns it, and runs a second onsen a 2 hour walk up the valley.  You can’t get much more remote.  The water temp is 40 degrees C or about 104 F.  And while it is a little sulpher-ish, it feels great to be soaking in the outdoors under the stars.
