Takayama was a
preservationists dream. Edo
period houses and shops, sake factories right in town, morning markets along
the river and enough tourist yen to keep it all afloat. We stayed in a 250 year old ryoken in
the old town, and walked everywhere.
The food was absolutely superb, but we could have skipped the
breakfast of raw egg and thousands of other small dishes, most of them containing
raw fish or fermented soybeans or something similar.
