There
was a very strong Chinese community in Hoi An, and they were all
traders. The Japanese community
was also equally stong, but while there are about 1000 Chinese still in Hoi
An (they have lived there for at least 200 years, yet still consider
themselves Chinese and still speak Chinese on a daily basis) all the Japanese
left in 1737 when the Japanese closed themselves off from the rest of the
world. Not only did the Japanese
decide to close themselves off, but they required all Japanese people living
in other countries to return to Japan.
Every one of them in Hoi An went back.
