Bhutan - Day 3 - October 15, 2002

Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan, has about 40,000 people living in the area. This is Thimphu Dzong, and in the background, the national assembly. The dzong is not only a monestary, but also the administrative center of the area. The "governor" of the area resides here, as do the Courts and the Revenue Office (which collects taxes)

Bill needed a haircut before he left, but only got one from some Indian barbers in Thimphu on Tuesday morning. Total cost : about 60 cents.

LThe national animal of Bhutan, the Takin, is a strange combination of animals. It has a nose like a moose, a body like an elk. feet like a deer, and antlers like a steer. And according to some sources, is incredibly stupid!

We made it to Thimphu, and our hotel just above the archery grounds. The national sport, archery has become much more competitive over the past few years, with compund bows displacing the bamboo bows that were traditionally used. The targets are made of wood, about 400 feet apart, and if you are not careful, you can hear the whiz of an arrow by your ear before you even know you are in the target area. Watch for the Bhutanese next Olympics - they are out for a medal!!
