Thailand – Bangkok – November 2 – 7, 2002

Off to the zoo one morning – we were just about the only Americans there – we tend to think of ourselves as US citizens, as opposed to Canadians, Mexicans  or other Americans, but to the Thai, we are Americans.  Marie and Bill are out on the pond in the zoo in a paddle boat.

We followed these two elephants around the perimeter road of the zoo, and found out that the handlers (who were riding them, yes, on their necks) were taking them for their daily bath in the lake.  These two were less than 3 feet from us.

There was little to fear from this monster, who made friends with Bill at the zoo..

The zoo was in a park, and the entire park was filled with graduates from the local college – all bringing their entire families for a picnic at the zoo, and celebrating the graduation in their robes.  The zoo was quite good and modern by most standards, but the safety concerns were much lower than they are in the US.  The elephants were right next to us, and were taking branches to eat from the tree we were sitting on.
