BangPa-In is one of the summer palaces of the king. Incredibly ornate, and with dozens of buildings in a variety of architectural styles, they also installed a family of elephants in topiary form.

Below:  The old capital, Ayuthaya, is being restored, and this is one of the architectural styles used for temples – this is the Ayuthaya style.

 



Dozens of Buddha statues are in pieces and only one or two have original heads. 

Below: Towers in four styles – Ayuthaya, Sukhothai, Ayuthaya and Khmer.

One of very few photos of the inside of a temple, this is a little more ornate than most. 

Below is a 12 century Buddha that is in a smaller temple right next to the one above..

Ayuthaya was the capital of Thailand until 1767 when it was totally sacked by the Burmese.  When it came time to rebuild, the king rebuilt in Bangkok.  But the ruins were magnificent, and have styles that are not duplicated in Bangkok.
