Vietnam – Ho Chi Minh City  November 27, 2002

There were large assembly rooms underground as well, all 3 to 5 meters underground.

In emergencies, there were two additional levels of tunnel, down another 3 and 5 meters, so that the lowest ones were more than 10 meters below the surface.  These were mainly escape tunnels.

The tunnel networks were just an indication of how dedicated to the war effort the Vietnamese were.  They viewed it as a means of attaining independence, while the US saw it as a concerted effort by communists to take over the entire of southeast asia.  For good reference material, read Robert Macnamara’s book about his time as Secretary of Defense .
