Vietnam – Mekong River Delta  November 28, 2002

These two kids, about 6 and 10 years old, both gave us a song.  They were not going to school, but were working in the candy factory their parents were running

The delta region is full of waterways and areas where the only mode of transport is boat.  We took a full day to visit the area and explore some of the water by paddle and motor boats.

The sun was pretty bright, and the snakes sometimes drop out of the trees and palms overhanging the boat, so we all wore these traditionally Vietnamese hats.

The delta was a wonderful area, completely different than any of our other trips.  Completely dependent on the water, the people fish and service the tourist industry, both Vietnamese and foreign tourists abound here in the high season.  There are also some family businesses that focus on producing fish (catfish is the #1 export), making candy, or providing food and drink for the local, people and the tourists.  Do the kids go to school at all?  We never found out .
